Effects of changes in extracellular ionic concentrations on aortic baroreceptors with nonmyelinated afferent fibers.

چکیده
The effects of ionic change upon one of the two classes of aortic baroreceptors, those having unmyelinated axons or C-fibers, have not been examined heretofore. Differences from results in aortic baroreceptors with myelinated axons might be expected because of differences in accessible surface area-volume relationships. Recordings were obtained using an in vitro aortic arch-aortic nerve preparation from 21 aortic C-fibers in 15 normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKR) 13-17 weeks old. During a slow pressure ramp, the endings responded with an irregular discharge. However, if the discharge was averaged over 10-20 seconds, the average discharge correlated well with the pressure level in the arch. The maximal discharge increased with faster ramp rates but the threshold was not shifted over the range of ramp rates employed. The relationship between pressure and discharge was tested during alterations in the extracellular concentrations of Na, K, and Ca ([Na]0, [K]0, and [Ca]0). A 12% decrease in [Na]0 clearly decreased the firing in the aortic C-fibers during a ramp stimulus. During a pressure step, the initial discharge was not decreased but the steady state discharge was clearly depressed. When the aortic arch was perfused continuously at constant pressure, a decrease in Na of only 6% depressed the activity. Doubling [K]0 increased firing for a few minutes and was followed by a reduction of discharge. Previous reports have shown no effect on myelinated baroreceptor discharge by a 12% decrease in [Na]0, a change which significantly depressed firing in all C-fiber baroreceptors in this study. Thus, C-fiber baroreceptors are more sensitive to changes in extracellular ionic composition than are baroreceptors with myelinated axons.

Actions of sodium and potassium ions on baroreceptors of normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Although mechanoreceptors are known to be sensitive to extracellular Na and K concentrations (INa]0 and [K 1,,), the ionic sensitivity of baroreceptors as it relates to their function has not been reported. An in vitro aortic arch-aortic nerve preparation has been used to study this problem in normotensive (NTR) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats. The threshold of the response to pressur...

This study was performed to determine if selective elimination of afferent input from two different types of previously described baroreceptors altered the ability of the dog to regulate blood pressure (BP), examining specifically if there was differential loss of baroreceptor control of tonic levels of baseline pressure versus dynamic changes in pressure. In the first series of experiments in ...
متن کاملBehavior of left ventricular mechanoreceptors with myelinated and nonmyelinated afferent vagal fibers in cats.
The purpose of this study was to determine the behavior of left ventricular mechanoreceptors with myelinated vagal afferents and to compare them with endings with nonmyelinated vagal afferents. Single unit activity was recorded from 13 endings with nonmyelinated vagal afferents (conduction velocity 2.1 +/- 0.3 m/sec) and from 16 endings with myelinated vagal afferents (conduction velocity 7.3 +...
متن کاملReflex Heart Rate Control Via Specific Aortic Nerve Afferents
Reflex bradycardia was elicited in rabbits via repetitive electrical stimulation of the central end of the sectioned left aortic nerve. Supramaximal stimulation produced a 16.9 ± 1.3% (SE) increase in the R-R interval when vagal and sympathetic efferent pathways were intact. Reducing the stimulation voltage allowed selective stimulation of the myelinated (A) fibers, and polarizing electrodes pl...
متن کاملCharacteristics of rat aortic baroreceptors with nonmedullated afferent nerve fibers.
Nervous activity was recorded from nonmedullated afferent baroreceptor fibers in the left aortic nerve of normotensive rats. The aortic arch was perfused in vitro with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution. Two different patterns of aortic C fiber discharge were found. One type (5 of 29 fibers) had a regular discharge at constant pressure whereas the other type had an irregular discharge. The dif...
